The Stratton Family Home

Sherri and I found our dream house in 2000. It is in the old section of East Millard, one of about a dozen homes built in the late 1800s in this area. The land was originally deeded in 1858, but I will have to do more research to find the exact year the house was built. My best guess so far is between 1890-1900 (106+ years old) It stands on a half acre corner lot.

The house was very well cared for by its previous owners ( a Baptist minister and his wife owned it for about 35 years). The wood work is beautiful with some very nice detailing. All hardwood floors throughout. Many original features, such as gas lights are still in the house. The only immediate remodeling needed is the upstairs bath, and updating the kitchen. We have done some painting and wallpapering more to our taste. Surprisingly little work to do on a house this age (although I'm sure we will fine more than we expect- this is an OLD house) It has a genuine Carriage House out back in VERY poor condition, we have restored most of it, but have more to do.

The opportunity to buy this place came up suddenly, I spotted a very small “For Sale” sign on the corner lot after my weekly habit of driving through this old Millard neighborhood. The owner contacted us after a week of us calling and leaving messages. He was out of town and I had almost given up hope. He finally called me Thursday, January 6th at about 11 am, we looked at it at noon and we got back to him at 5 pm that day with a offer. After meeting with him and his wife on the following Saturday for breakfast, we closed on the house Tuesday January 18th. Sherri and I moved in August 2000.
